It’s never been easier to complete the 16 week, Instructor Led H&R Block Income Tax Course.

In 2021 you will be able to select between registering to attend your weekly sessions IN-CLASS or ONLINE. The content, materials and outcomes will be the same.

Plus for Instructor Led Course Students, the opportunity to start a rewarding career as a Tax Consultant at H&R Block.

Our online modules coupled with weekly workshops led by our team of experienced instructors, will take you through all you need to know including the latest tax changes, helpful tax tips and suggestions for how to maximise refunds.

By the completion of the course, you’ll have all the skills you need to successfully prepare tax returns under the supervision of a Registered Tax Agent.

The course will give you the basis for a career as a tax consultant, and allow you to prepare returns. So if you are looking for a new career, then this may be right up your alley as no previous experience is necessary.

Weekly IN-CLASS workshops

To complete the course you will be required to attend one 2 and a half hour workshop per week which will be led by one of our instructors. On registration, you select the in-class location, day and time that suits you best and then attend that same session for 16 consecutive weeks. 

In addition, you will also need to commit to approximately 10 hours of additional study at home each week consisting of reading, watching online tutorials and completing online assignments.

This course includes detailed training using tax preparation software (which will be provided to all students), so good computer skills are a must. Students are also required to have access to a computer or laptop that is equipped with Windows (or is Windows compatible), as well as having reasonable internet connectivity.

Note that the Tax Software is not compatible with Apple Mac devices. Refer to the terms and conditions for more information.

EACH WEEK

BEFORE YOUR WEEKLY IN-CLASS WORKSHOP

  • Read that weeks module which is available in E-book format. The e-book includes the theory, examples both written & video demos and the chance to test your own knowledge as you go along.
  • Once you have completed the e-book module, you will then access our Learning Management System where you partake in a pre-recorded e-learning video workshop. Here you will be virtually led by our Instructor team through a series of activities and practical application scenarios.
  • Complete pre-workshop quiz before attending class 

YOUR WEEKLY IN-CLASS WORKSHOP

  • Attend your 2.5 hour in-class weekly workshop
  • There your instructor will guide you through practical applications and exercises that will help you to consolidate your learning
  • You will also need to take your laptop to class each week
  • NOTE: There is no guest WIFI available on site so you will need either hotspot or portable dongle  if you want to access your e-book in class. 

COVID SAFE LOCATIONS

H&R Block is committed to ensuring that every in-class location will be limited students to allow for appropriate social distancing and sanitisation requirements. Masks can be worn based on local requirements.

In the event that the location is identified as HOT SPOT, all students will be notified and for the required period, instructor led classes will be transferred to online.

  • Connect ONLINE for you 2.5 hour in-class weekly workshop
  • There your instructor will guide you through practical applications and exercises that will help you to consolidate your learning.

TO JOIN ONLINE you will need:

  • Reasonable speed internet and laptop/desktop with microphone & speakers
  • Having a second monitor would be handy but not necessary
  • Platform we will be using is MICROSOFT TEAMS. 

MODULE 1

Introduction to the course and income basics: This covers identifying what counts as assessable income to PAYG summaries, government payments, residency and calculating taxable income rates. 

MODULE 2

Work related deductions: This Module delves into what counts as a deduction, plus typical expenses and donations. Interest and dividend income and expenses are also examined. 

MODULE 3

Medicare: A look at the difference between a deduction and a tax offset, the seniors and pensioners tax offset and all aspects of the Medicare levy, including exemptions and surcharges. Includes references to foreign residency and how this can affect Medicare levy and tax offsets. 

MODULE 4

Depreciating assets: This Module examines depreciation in various forms and variations, as well as uniform capital allowances and low value pooling.

MODULE 5

Motor vehicle and travel deductions: A deep dive into all motor vehicle-related expenses, including relevant travel expenses, award transport payments and other valid travel expenses.

MODULE 6

Self education and tax offsets: From HECS to HELP and self-education, this Module looks at the benefits, deductions and expenses connected to self-education. This Module also looks at a variety of tax offsets that can be claimed by some individuals.

MODULE 7

Other income streams: This Module starts with Employment Termination Payments and moves into various superannuation payments, including lump sum payments, bonuses and alternative income.

MODULE 8

Rental properties: A wide-ranging look at aspects of tax relating to rental properties, including income, deductions, expenses and negative gearing. 

MODULE 9

Capital gains: This Module introduces Capital Gains Tax and then examines it in detail, including understanding what an asset is to indexation and offsets.

MODULE 10

Foreign income and trust income: Foreign income, assets, pensions – and what to do about them under Australian tax law – are covered in this Module. Then a closer look at declaring trust income earned from a managed investment.

MODULE 11

Personal services and business income: The final Module takes a close look at personal services income and small business income and related taxation requirements.

Enrolment and payment options

The Instructor Led Courses, both IN-CLASS and ONLINE fee of $525 covers all materials including tax preparation software. The total fee includes a $100 non-refundable registration fee.

Career opportunities

Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll be set to prepare your own tax returns. 

If you’re interested in taking it a step further as a paying career, only students who complete the Instructor Led Course (either IN-CLASS or ONLINE)  will have the opportunity to apply for a job working with H&R Block – provided, of course, that you have good availability during July through to October, excellent people skills and achieve a mark of 80% or above.

The opportunity to apply for a job with H&R Block is not available to students who register in the Self Paced Learning Option.
