Taxpayers are urged to beware of phishing scams that send emails purporting to be from the Australian Tax Office (ATO), myTax, or e-Tax. These scams may direct you to a (scam) website and request that you enter personal confidential data like Tax File Number, bank account details, DOB, address, employer information, etc. Alternatively, clicking the link may cause a harmful virus to be downloaded onto your computer. The ATO has received numerous complaints about an email, which usually includes the words 'Tax refund' in the subject heading.
The ATO, Centrelink, banks and financial institutions will never send emails requesting verification of personal details for any reason, including tax returns. If you suspect the authenticity of an email, call the ATO or your tax agent directly. Do not click on any link on the email or call a phone number provided by the email.
